Fanfan the Tulip

I really like swashbuckling stories. I don’t know why this fascinates me so much, but what I would love to learn about fencing. I could still find courses, at what price? All this to present to you today’s film which is French and which was released 20 years ago.

Summary: Fanfan is a handsome young man with devastating charm whose edge of the sword is deadly. Poor, without family and without a name, he nevertheless takes life as it comes to him, and so do the girls at the same time. To escape a marriage and following a young woman’s prophecy, he enlists in the army for the raging war. From then on, duels and romance punctuate the story during which he was given the last name “La Tulipe”.

This film is synonymous with nostalgia for me. I remember the summer when I was ten when, for the first time, I went to see a film outdoors. The screen was a white canvas with a pile of straw bales for support. I still remember the coolness of nightfall.

This story is very easy to watch. No hassle and lots of good times. I like the naivety and playful side of Fanfan’s character while rolling my eyes at his immaturity. The fight scenes are very well choreographed and I laughed more than once. On the other hand, I don’t know if you can really refer to me for humor, I’m rather a good audience person.

Fanfan the Tulip is a character known to my grandparents and there are many adaptations. I’m a little ashamed to admit to having only seen this 2003 version…
